Mumbai’s Tactile Alchemy Turns Ocean Plastic into Musical Boardwalks

Indian interdisciplinary team Kalaa Collective won the D&AD Black Pencil for "Sonic Touch," repurposing plastic waste from the Arabian Sea into resonant boardwalks. Funded by UNDP, an 800-meter recycled polymer pathway installed at Juhu Beach triggers frequency-specific vibrations via pressure sensors when barefoot pedestrians tread: PET bottle fragments emit sitar harmonics while fishing net fibers generate tabla drum rhythms. Handrails embed Braille inscriptions translating marine biologists’ audio archives of endangered species.

Community engagement allows plastic recycling rewards—each kilogram recycled earns three minutes of composition time in tidal-powered recording booths for personalized oceanic symphonies. Impact verification showed fivefold increase in beach clean-up participation and 14-decibel coastal noise pollution reduction certified by acoustical engineers. When replicated across 22 slums by municipal authorities, tactile walkways unexpectedly increased social interaction frequency among autistic children by 63%.
