Nina Petrovic Revives Ancient Dyeing Techniques for Urban Fashion

Serbian dyer Nina Petrovic revitalized natural dyeing through her "Anthropocene Chroma" project, using lichen and mushroom extracts to create UV-reactive textiles. Her signature technique involves fermenting pigments with mycelium networks, producing colorfast dyes that shift hues under different light conditions.

Petrovic's collaboration with Belgrade fashion week designers resulted in collections where garments change appearance based on weather patterns. Each piece includes a "dye map" showing the exact lichen species and fermentation timelines used. The project revived 12 endangered dye plants in Balkan regions, with UNESCO designating her methods as Intangible Cultural Heritage.

"Nature's palette is infinite if we listen," Petrovic explained. Her dyes are now used in hospital uniforms requiring antimicrobial properties, reducing synthetic dye chemical waste by 22 tons annually.
