Indian educational designer Priya Khanna launched "SignSpeak," a tactile Braille system integrating animated sign language visuals. The modular tiles use conductive ink pathways to teach Indian Sign Language through touch, with embedded pressure sensors providing haptic feedback. Khanna collaborated with Deaf educators to develop stories where characters "speak" through vibrating patterns.
The system debuted in Mumbai schools, improving sign language comprehension by 65% among hearing-impaired students. Each tile's hexagonal shape allows infinite combinations, enabling customizable lessons for diverse needs. UNICEF has partnered with Khanna to distribute 10,000 kits to conflict zones, where the tactile system operates without electricity.
"Education should speak every language," Khanna remarked. Her design won the INDEX: Award Grand Prix, with Microsoft adapting the technology for their Seeing AI app's tactile interface.
