Luca Bertoni Redesigns Pharmaceutical Packaging for Elderly Accessibility

Italian industrial designer Luca Bertoni has solved medication mismanagement through "ClariMed," a line of tactile pharmaceutical packaging. The system uses raised Braille patterns synchronized with color gradients to indicate dosage times, while magnetic closures prevent accidental overconsumption.

Bertoni's research included 18 months observing seniors in Milanese care facilities, leading to non-slip grip zones and pressure-sensitive tear lines. The packaging integrates with smart pill organizers that vocalize instructions in 12 languages when scanned.

The design has been adopted by Italy's national healthcare system, reducing elderly dosing errors by 58%. Bertoni's methodology is now being adapted for diabetes management tools in Japan. "Good design for aging populations benefits everyone," Bertoni noted. His work won the Red Dot Design Award's "Design for Ageing" category.
